Ronin Sanouvong

A preview of my work
Software engineering graduate, since May 2026. I build across the stack — desktop apps, web, and games — and I'm usually the one tying the pieces together and testing at the seams. I also make my own art and music for anything I want to be fully mine.

01 CMU's CS Academy and Samurai Showdown +

Started with Carnegie Mellon's CS Academy — a browser-based Python curriculum. The project I made there was Samurai Showdown, a 2-player platform fighter with two characters, full movesets, damage-scaling knockback, and an AI opponent. It later ended up on my high school's arcade machine with adjusted controls.

Looking at the code now it's a single onStep() doing everything and three duplicated sprite skeletons per character because the platform doesn't flip sprites — but it works, and finishing it taught me that shipping something matters more than building it the right way the first time.

02 Unity, C#, and shipping AstroAllStar +

Got into Unity and C# before I touched a web framework. Unity taught me not just how code worked, but how to use it. AstroAllStar is on itch.io. Arcade space shooter, complete loop, real enemy waves. It's the first thing I shipped where I could just send a friend a link, but I can't say I'm done with it. Behind the scenes, I have more ambition for this project in the works, enough to turn it into a different game.

03 Thaddeus Stevens — first real teams +

Enrolled at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for an Associates in Computer Software Engineering Technology. First time working in real teams. Stevens Results was a student-led business initiative that didn't go far. While it was active, I was one of the lead team members.

On Kronos Adventure (Flask + MySQL idle-RPG, Spring 2025) I was the one reading across all four contributors' code to keep merges clean and integrated their work cleanly into an Idle RPG. On SmartHR (Laravel + MySQL HR app, Fall 2025) I was project lead and built the custom automatic payroll engine. Two very different teams — and I learned more from cross-contributor integration than from anything I built alone.

04 Drakonas capstone, ICPC, and going deeper +

Currently leading Drakonas, my 2-person capstone — a digital art and animation desktop application on Electron, SparkJava, and MySQL. I own the cross-system integration: spawning the Java process from Electron, the REST contract between client and backend, the persistence layer's design.

Alongside that, I competed in ICPC North America South Regional (34th of 91, top 25%), built TaskFlow as a cross-platform Flutter app, and worked through a quarter of advanced data integration coursework. Graduating May 2026.

PROJECT 01

Drakonas

Digital art and animation desktop application
In progress · Capstone

A 2-person capstone team building a desktop application for digital artists. Multi-tool drawing across stacked layers, frame-by-frame timelines, and export to GIF, ZIP, and MP4. I own the cross-system integration — spawning the Java process from Electron, the REST contract between client and backend, the schema design for the persistence layer — and I lead the architectural decisions. Currently resolving Webpack/React HMR build-pipeline issues that block clean startup outside the dev environment. The work is real but the build is not yet smooth.

PROJECT 02

AstroAllStar

Arcade space shooter
Shipped · itch.io

An original arcade space shooter built solo in Unity and C#, published to itch.io. Complete game loop, enemy AI, scoring, and a real shipped build. The first project I made where someone outside my school could play it without me being in the room.

PROJECT 03

Kronos Adventure

Idle RPG e-commerce game
4-person team · Spring 2025

A multi-page idle-RPG with shop, inventory, and progression mechanics on a Flask + MySQL backend, built as a 4-person team project. I owned git integration across all four contributors — reading both the Python backend and the JavaScript views for intent — and was usually the first to surface breakage at the Flask/view/MySQL boundaries. Drove game state from MySQL by joining per-user inventory and equipped items against stats from a separate table.

PROJECT 04

SmartHR

HR & payroll application
Project Lead · Fall 2025

A Laravel + MySQL HR application — employee and admin accounts, authentication, salary management, and a payroll simulator. I led a small team and built the custom automatic payroll engine: configurable per-user payroll settings drove the engine's behavior, including pay frequency (weekly, biweekly, monthly), with a supporting preferences subsystem feeding it.

PROJECT 05

TaskFlow

Cross-platform task manager
Course final · Spring 2026

A cross-platform task manager built in Flutter, deploying to Web, Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows from a single codebase. Firebase Authentication for sign-in, Firestore as the document-based persistence layer. Built from a Flutter template scaffold — first real Flutter project, deployed across five platforms.

PROJECT 06

ICPC North America South

Competitive programming · Regional
34th / 91 · top 25%

Placed 34th out of 91 teams in the ICPC North America South Regional (Mid-Atlantic) — top 25% nationally. Six algorithmic problems solved under timed conditions. Competitive programming has a different feel than coursework: you're not building, you're translating a problem to working code as fast as you can with the clock running.

The rest

What I do when I'm not at a keyboard. Or sometimes still at a keyboard, just for different reasons.

Artist

I do my own 2D art, digital illustration, and animation. I learn whichever tool the project asks for — Blender alongside Unity, Strudel alongside FL Studio — because I'd rather make the parts that are mine, mine.

Music

Trumpet, guitar, piano, and FL Studio. I sing many songs from memory. Though my experience is far from professional, I work hard at the skills I want — most recently, building a Strudel REPL piece intended as live-coded music for some of the things I'm working on.

Tang Soo Do

I have a black belt in Tang Soo Do — Korean martial art, traditional curriculum. Started young, kept at it.

D&D and Writing

I run and play D&D. Worldbuilding, encounter design, and DMing are some of my favorite ways to spend a weekend. I also write fiction outside of code.

Esports

I compete in local esports events, won some cash. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has always got me going and it's where I actually place well, I adore Guilty Gear Strive, Pokémon Unite a while in between with a dedicated team of 5 for 8 months, and beginning my League of Legends journey with a friend.
